Kingdom of Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan has been a monarchy since 1907, and was ruled by five hereditary kings in succession. All the kings come from the Wangchuck dynasty, Sir Ugyen Wangchuck being the first hereditary king of Bhutan.

In the Bhutanese language the term “Druk Gyalpo” refers to “King of Bhutan“.
The current king of Bhutan is the 5th Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, who ascended the golden throne after the 4th Druk Gyalpo abdicated the throne in 2006.

The kings of Bhutan have ruled the country in times of peace and war, and the people have loved and looked upon their kings with great pride. Bhutan’s kings are much to be remembered for their service to the nation and the people.
The outside world has of late also taken notice of the kings’ doings and they love the idea of Gross National Happiness, which was a remarkable idea coined by the 4th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
